Beekley Medical expands RT-SPOT Line for CT simulation with new pellet and crosshair options

September 10, 2024
In response to the trending demand for increased precision in cancer treatments, Beekley Medical has announced the addition of three new markers to its popular RT-SPOT® line of elevated skin markers for CT simulation. These new options, introduced due to customer feedback, include pellet and crosshair markers.

First launched in Spring 2023, the RT-SPOT® Line has proven to be a valuable tool for medical dosimetrists and radiation oncology professionals by reducing the need for manual contouring and density overrides. The line was showcased at major conferences such as AAMD, ACRO, AAPM, and ASTRO, where it received widespread attention.

Attendees at these events specifically requested the addition of pellet and crosshair markers on the same radiolucent, elevated foam backing as the original RT-SPOT® Line marker. This unique elevated design ensures that the imaging portion of the marker remains outside the automatic body contour, significantly improving accuracy during the planning process.

Radiation therapists use multiple tools, such as immobilization devices, lasers, and skin markers, to ensure precise targeting of radiotherapy. However, traditional skin markers that lie flat on the skin are often included in the body outline during treatment planning, potentially leading to inaccurate dose calculations. The RT-SPOT® skin markers address this issue as they are elevated from the skin line, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual contouring and reducing the risk of dose inaccuracies.

According to a physicist in Northfield, Minnesota, the elevated design of RT-SPOT® markers creates a clean body contour without artifacts, saving time and improving workflow efficiency for dosimetry and physicians. A dosimetrist in Bloomington, Indiana, also praised the markers for reducing the need for plan rework and enhancing overall accuracy in treatment planning.

The newly introduced RT-SPOT® markers for radiation oncology now include:

● A flexible line marker
● 2.3mm and 4.0mm pellet markers
● A crosshair marker

Both the pellet and crosshair markers feature a transparent center, allowing clear visualization of the skin or thermoplastic during use.
