NYU Langone Health has named Dr. Alec C. Kimmelman as its next CEO and dean of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

His appointment will take effect September 1, following the retirement of Dr. Robert I. Grossman, who has held the dual role since 2007.

Kimmelman currently leads the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center, part of the New York City-based health system, and serves as chair of the department of radiation oncology. He joined NYU Langone in 2016 and has played a key role in expanding the institution’s cancer research capabilities. Under his leadership, the cancer center launched a new Center for Molecular Oncology in 2024, focused on integrating genomic testing into routine patient care.

His selection follows a national search led by the NYU Langone Board of Trustees. Kenneth Langone, chair of the board and co-chair of the search committee, said Kimmelman was chosen for his leadership, experience, and character. “He is the right choice to build on Bob’s legacy and lead our institution into its next phase of innovation and impact,” Langone said in a statement.

Grossman, who will remain at NYU Langone in a new role as executive vice president to the board, is credited with overseeing major institutional growth. During his tenure, the system expanded to include seven inpatient facilities, more than 320 outpatient sites, and two tuition-free medical schools. It also posted $14.2 billion in revenue last year.

Kimmelman, a physician-scientist with more than two decades of research in pancreatic cancer biology, said he was “humbled and excited” to take on the role. “I look forward to building upon Dr. Grossman’s astonishing record of achievements,” he said.

NYU Langone currently employs more than 48,000 people, including over 12,000 clinicians, stretching across six inpatient facilities and over 300 locations throughout the New York City region and in Florida.
