The American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO's) Annual Meeting concluded June 2 in Orlando. "Personalizing Cancer Care" was this year's theme, intended to help oncologists discover better ways to diagnose and treat cancer based on patient uniqueness and need. Cancer survivor, singer/actress Olivia Newton-John kicked off the meeting.
ASCO released breaking news of the event with a video showcase of experts. Studies showing highlights of advancement in treatment of several forms of cancer including GI, lung, breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer were released. Information was also released on the potential of menopausal hormone therapy and increased risk of lung cancer.
Richard L. Schilsky, MD, ASCO President prepared a patient perspective distributed as a podcast on the website. In the recording, Schilsky offers his expert opinion on personalized medicine. A number of other podcasts were also made available for download.
Sessions highlighted research on cancer survivorship, managing side effects and cancer screenings. A booklet entitled Managing the Cost of Cancer Care is a guide for patients to assist them in understanding costs related to care. The document also provides a list of financial resources.
