The IS INVOS Infant Regional Saturation Sensor is intended for use with the INVOS (In Vivo Optical Spectroscopy) cerebral/somatic oximetry system to provide continuous, noninvasive measurement of regional tissue oxygen saturation (rSO₂) in infants and neonates. When placed on the skin over a target site (e.g. cerebral region, somatic region), it uses near-infrared light to interrogate tissue beneath the skin and reports a venous-weighted oxygen saturation, reflecting residual oxygen in the tissue after extraction. This provides clinicians with insight into the balance of oxygen supply and demand in that region, potentially signaling ischemia or perfusion compromise before systemic parameters change.
In practice, the sensor is affixed to the infant’s skin (with the hydrocolloid adhesive), connected to the INVOS monitor via its cable, and the system displays rSO₂ trends continuously. The small footprint and gentle adhesive are designed to suit delicate neonatal or infant skin. Because it is disposable, it mitigates risks associated with reuse or cross-contamination. It can be used on head, limb, flank, or other soft tissue areas, depending on what regional tissue is of interest (cerebral or somatic).
Clinically, it supports monitoring in surgical, neonatal ICU, or critical care settings—especially where cerebral perfusion is at risk (e.g. congenital heart surgery, neonatal asphyxia, cardiorespiratory instability). By tracking rSO₂ in real time, clinicians can detect trends of falling saturation, intervene (e.g. adjust ventilation, perfusion, hemoglobin, blood pressure) before irreversible injury occurs. The sensor’s data are auxiliary—they are not a stand-alone diagnostic tool, but rather used in conjunction with other clinical parameters to guide therapy.
