Ultimately, our goal is to understand pre-term birth so that we can learn how to prevent it. These next few years will be critical in our work. While we have begun to see improvement, still nearly half a million babies are born too soon in the U.S. each year. This year, we challenged every state to lower their pre-term birth rates 8 percent by 2014, focusing on state and region-specific plans to prevent premature birth.
