Long-time American Board of Radiology (ABR) volunteer John A. Kaufman, MD, MS, has been named secretary-treasurer of the Board of Governors. He replaces Robert M. Barr, MD, who was named president-elect earlier this year.
Dr. Kaufman has had pivotal roles in the transition of interventional radiology from a subspecialty of diagnostic radiology to a primary specialty of the ABR and in the development of the IR residency. He has been an ABR volunteer since 1997.
“Volunteering for the ABR has probably never been as important as in the present time,” Dr. Kaufman said. “The ABR is navigating the rapidly changing landscape of professional certification as well as huge societal and population health challenges. Volunteering now is an unparalleled opportunity to make a positive difference for ABR diplomates and the public that they serve. I’m honored to be able to fulfill the role of secretary-treasurer and look forward to working closely with the incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers of the ABR.”
Dr. Kaufman is the inaugural chair of the department of interventional radiology, director of the Dotter Interventional Institute, and the Frederick S. Keller Professor of Interventional Radiology at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. He also has appointments as a professor of diagnostic radiology, surgery, and medicine at OHSU.
He has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications including five textbooks. He is co-editor of the quarterly review journal Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Associate Editor for the journal CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology. He has been honored as a Gold Medalist of the Society of Interventional Radiology, a Distinguished Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe, and a Distinguished Alumnus of the Boston University School of Medicine. He also received distinguished service awards from the ABR in 2010 and 2013.
