In addition, a survey by Physician Advocacy Institute and consulting firm Avalere found that as of the beginning of 2021, 70% of physicians were working for private equity firms, hospitals or other corporate organizations. Private equity and similar stakeholders were responsible for a 32% increase in acquisitions between 2019 and 2020, while corporations acquired 20,900 practices during those two years and 48,000 additional doctors left independent practice to work for a hospital or other large entity.

Edward Elmhurst includes Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, and has over 50 outpatient departments and 7,700 employees. It was reported to be considering buying Sanford Health of Sioux Falls in 2018, according to NewsQuick24.

Prior to COVID-19, the healthcare provider was displacing work from doctors to nurse practitioners and paramedics at specific ERs on the grounds that “patients made it very clear that they want less costly treatment and convenient access to deal with problems of lower visual acuity,” reported NewsQuick24.

Neither hospital responded to HCB News for comment about the potential deal.
