Samsung Electronics America Inc. announced on Monday the commercial release of the company's first digital radiology system, called the Samsung XGEO GC80.

The Korean electronics giant has been working on becoming a major player in the medical equipment space with diagnostic imaging product releases as well as major acquisitions, including NeuroLogica Corp., a company best known for its mobile CT scanners.

The release of the XGEO GC80 represents Samsung's entrance into the DR market, according to a statement from the company.

"The Samsung XGEO GC80 will provide an innovative alternative in the digital radiology market, leveraging Samsung's deep expertise in advanced imaging technology and ergonomic design," said Doug Ryan, group vice president for health and medical equipment at Samsung. "The Samsung XGEO GC80 provides exceptional image quality and departmental workflows through automation that is essential for both provider and patient care."

The system uses Samsung's TFT-based flat panel detector and incorporates proprietary Adaptive Local Contrast Stretching software.

The system received 510(k) approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year.
