Honoree Allen Wolfe
Alexandria, Va. - Allen Wolfe, RN, MSN, CFRN, CCRN, a critical care clinical specialist with Washington Hospital Center's MedSTAR Transport in Lanham, Md., has been presented with a 2010 Excellence in Community Service Award by the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS). A flight nurse with MedSTAR Transport for the past 20 years, Wolfe was honored with the award for his work on the Mid-Atlantic Regional Pre-Hospital Mechanical Circulatory Support Task Force 2009 Field Guide.

The field guide is based on a training program that Wolfe developed to train EMS and hospital care personnel in utilizing the numerous different Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) that came into use after the Washington Hospital Center's cardiac program began implanting LVADs in 1999. As these devices became more commonplace, Wolfe quickly identified the need not only for rapid transport of this specialty patient population, but also for community outreach in supplying training to EMS agencies and hospitals as they began treating LVAD patients. His first solution came when he developed the "10 Questions to ask LVAD Patients," an easy-to-use assessment tool that quickly became a reference guide for EMS and hospital caregivers - and which has since led to the forming of Mid-Atlantic Regional Pre-Hospital Mechanical Circulatory Support Task Force and its accompanying field guide.

"It is Allen's involvement - by foreseeing in communities the need for LVAD education - that has resulted in the latest up-to-date VAD information being provided in the field as well as at the bedside," said AAMS President Daniel Hankins, MD, FACEP, who announced the award during a March 18 Capitol Hill reception and awards ceremony that was part of AAMS' annual spring conference in Washington, D.C. "Essentially the product of a harmonized joint effort between VAD coordinators and EMS providers, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Pre-Hospital Mechanical Circulatory Support Task Force and field guide are now poised to expand to the state and even national level," he added.
