The Beckman table top Airfuge Ultracentrifuge is a miniture air turbine capable of accelerating rotors up to 95,000 rpm in only 30 seconds. The instrument uses no vacuum or high-speed bearings; the rotor is supported and turned by streams or air. Rotor speed can be determined by conversion of the applied air pressure, as read on the instrument gauge, to rpm. Rotor speed is controlled by the pressure regulator knob on top of the unit.
The Beckman Airfuge Ultracentrifuge is an exeptionally safe instrument because the rotor is held in place by a pressure differential created during centrifugation. A factory set limitaion of the applied air pressure is provided at 35 psig (240 kPa). However, do not operate the instrument beyond 30 psig (207 kPa).

The Beckman Airfuge is easy to operate
The Airfuge is so simple to operate that anyone can run it with only a few minutes instruction. The loaded rotor is centerd on the strator, the chamber cover is lowered into place, and the timer is set for the desired run time. The operator turns the air regulator knob clockwise four turns to lock down the cover, then contiues turning until the rotor lifts and starts to rotate. The knob is turned gradully, accerating the rotor untile the desires presssure reading (speed) is attained on the gauge.

Rotor Temperature
Rotor temperature is always a few degress above ambient temperature. The instrument can be run in a cold room for lower temperatures.

Safety
The instrument cover cannot be opened when the air pressure is on, and for additional safety, a mechanical interlock prevents the driving air from being turned on until the instrment cover is closed.
