PASCAL (Pattern-Scanning Laser) is a retinal photocoagulation laser system — originally developed by OptiMedica and now distributed by Topcon.
It is designed for retinal and choroidal laser therapy — including treatment of vascular and structural retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, retinal tears/detachments, and even glaucoma-related procedures (e.g. trabeculoplasty / peripheral iridotomy depending on modules).

⚙️ Key Features & Technical Aspects
PASCAL uses a pattern-scanning method: instead of delivering single laser spots one at a time, it can deliver predefined patterns — arrays, lines, arcs, grids, etc. with a single foot-pedal press.
Pulse duration is much shorter than traditional lasers — typically 10–20 milliseconds, compared with conventional 100–200 ms.
Delivery speed is high — for example, up to ~ 56 spots in ~ 0.6 seconds, enabling a fast pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) in a single session.
Adjustable spot sizes / patterns: single-spot or pattern (square arrays, macular grids, arcs, etc.) depending on indication.
More advanced versions support sub-threshold (micropulse / low-fluence) treatment and safety-oriented protocols — reducing collateral damage to retina, minimizing discomfort, and improving patient tolerance.
