Agree with Tom Charles.
First, try different film pack or current pack in different tray. If nothing changes, it must be something with rf-tag reader part.
For troubleshooting you should check cables from RF-tag reader (underneath tray) for loosen connections or even swap upper and lower trays: in DS5302s that i've seen they was identical.
Never faced firmware failure, it's barely possible, i think.
