Hello:
We have a Lunar DPX Alpha Bone Densitometer with the following failure. First time that happened an error was "X Ray source failure", very low counts with shutter open. After that first time, the error we receive is always "Negative KV supply feedback out of acceptable range". According to the entry in the right corner in the error log it's error 78, wich is a "Faulty Negative Power Supply". My question is: How reliable is this diagnostics? Is it really a Faulty Negative Power Supply? or it might be an X Ray Tube failure? or something else? I will appreciate any help.

There are a couple of things you can try, if you have the Diagnostic Software. You can disconnect the high voltage cables from the tubehead. In Diagnostics, ramp the unit to 41kv @ 150mA. NOTE: DO NOT RAMP ABOVE 41kv. IT WILL ARC. If it ramps without error, than usually it is not the power supplies. It could be the tubehead control cable or the tubehead, more than likely the cable. If it does not ramp up, then your negative power supply is probably bad. The last time I heard, parts for this model were no longer available from GE and it might be hard to source that power supply. The manufacturer of the power supply will not sale to anyone but GE.
Before you do anything just clean and re-grease the high voltage connections.
If the error persists there is no other way to find the fault part than replacing one by one the x-ray tube, hvps neg and hvps pos.
Of course I agree with both of our friends but first of all follow the re-grease procedure.
