Hello Joseph,
I believe I am working on this problem with Dalton Stephens. I am shipping him the repair kit for the smart siphon today. Once the smart valve is removed, I recommend that you use the siphon in the new configuration and not try to replace or repair it.
Any smart siphon you find will ultimately develope the same or worse problems.
a poor transfer isn't the smart valve, probably. The smart valve permits proper pre cooling of the fill line. If it was stuck closed, you'd be quenching the magnet. If it was stuck open, you'd get a good transfer and then the boiloff rate would be high. I think you've got a poor vacuum in the line, which can be repaired. You do need someone who knows what they're doing to have a look at it, though.
Smart valves never get stuck open. They always have problems opening during transfer line cool down, this causes alot of the LHe to be waisted cooling the line, resulting in poor transfer efficiency.
If the smart valve is stuck closed the magnet won't quench, the LHe will simply be forced out of the transfer line vent and none will enter the magnet.
Hi,
Sometimes smart siphon doesn't want open on the beginning LHe transfer. We do as follows:
1. Depressurize the cryostat.
2. Remove the smart siphon. Special shape key is needed to open the screw keeping this valve and it is necessary to close proper gas connections.
3. Close the hole with the special plug (should be delivered with the magnet - there are 2 boxes with the tools and parts).
4. Warm up and fix the original siphon. Possible damaged parts.
5. Replace in reverese order. Remember to depressurize the cryostat before opening.
This procedure can takes about 30-40min. Ask for more details if needed
Good luck!
We sell an inexpensive kit that lets you remove the "smart valve" and convert the syphon to regular transfer line.
The proceedure is simplea and can be accomplished in about 1/2 hour.

We seem to have a stuck smart valve as we lose a larger percentage of cryogen whenever we do a fill.
Can it be repaired or should it be replaced?
