I am repairing a GE Precision 500D IUI Replacement PC and I am having an issue that I do not know how to deal with. I have the login for the computer, but when I log in i just get a BASH terminal, which is correct according to the Training Manual. I would think that the Applications would autostart. Should I attempt to install or reinstall the Applications or is there something that I am missing.

Solution Description:
Precision 500D operator I.U.I. touch console (Venus) boots with errors:
*** An error occurred during the file system check
*** dropping you to a shell. The system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell
(Repair file system) ##
Or the system fails to boot because of a file system inconsistency problem.
Resolution:
Perform the following process to repair system files.
1. When the system prompts you for the super user password to continue with the file system check, type the root password: operator . Press Enter.
2. Type the following at the shell prompt: fsck -y -A -R -p . Press Enter.
3. You should see something similar to the following:
Parallelizing fsck version 1.19 (13-July-2000)
/dev/hal is mounted. Cannot continue, aborting
/home : clean. 450/390912 files, 41733/781152 blocks
4. Exit the single user shell and allow the system to reboot by typing: exit .Press Enter.
5. After the system reboots if it still reports errors, enter the root password again: operator . Press Enter.
6. At the shell prompt, type: fsck -y / .Press Enter. (There is a space after -y).
This will correct problems wth (/) root file syste, the partition that has the linux redhat OS files.
7. To logout of the single user mode and allow the system to reboot, type: exit . Press Enter.
If the system fails to boot properly, reload the OS and the Applications software following the load from cold procedure. If you reload the IUI console software, you must recheck the site configuration parameters and verify the selection of the purchased options. Restore also the System Controller (MARS) and Positioner databases. Restore the procedure edit examples from the backup floppy also.
