You must put the camera into manual mode to clear the error. These errors will randomly appear from time to time. Unless the error can always be repeated through some sequence of motion or user input, I wouldn't worry about what may have caused it.
Only by monitoring the exact events prior to a repeatable motion error can you determine if some motion or encoder is faulty or misadjusted.
