Trying to repair an old Sharplan 40 c - it turns on - but does not initiate its system check . could it be software or hardware . I have gone to all the pc card and the display + keyboard . Could it be a bad CPU ? help is appreciated .

It could be something much simpler. Do you have the service manual? If you've never repaired one, getting advice online isn't going to result in a safe, proper, and legal repair.
Mickey , I have played with those for a while . I do not need a legal repair as I'm all the way down in the caribbean trying to fix it for less fortunate people . I think it should be simple but I can not figure out - - I have electricity flowing on every circuit and still I can not make it boot - One component driving the display should be bad . Help please - maybe I can send you a small video of the display . sometimes the display board is erratic giving me hieroglyphic pattern - or all the board lights up - but still no system check . The thing makes my hair goes straight up and makes me feel stupid - so help please .
status : turns on:
1- green light by the key - all display blank
2- He-Ne on light is seen out .
3- Emission light not blinking
4- I do not hear the air compressor
So I'm guessing A ) - are the Bridge rectifiers 1 and 2 are bad ( seems not as I tested them on board ) - would be the caus that Control is out .
B) no current to the air compressor means that the K3 is not activated By the opto isolation board
C) if light is on the opto isolation board receives its power from le LVPS
D) the opto isolation Trafo gives 24 VOLTS AC to the board
could it be a bad opto isolation board ?
I guess this is what I've got so far . An expert like you could figure out in a snap.
