Jessica Foley, Scientific Director, on the future of Focused Ultrasound

by Robert Garment, Executive Editor | July 16, 2014

HCBN: Please tell us what the highlights of this year's FUSF Symposium will be?

JF: Well the Symposium is this October 12-16, 2014, in Washington, DC. This is our 4th Symposium, and thus far we have been holding one every two years. The structure is designed to promote interaction and foster collaboration and networking among all the attendees and exhibitors. When people who have been working on FUS independently get together and share their data and clinical results, all kinds of wonderful things can happen. We're like an incubator for new ideas and concepts. That's one reason why we have someone like Rich Hamilton from IBM talk about the value of innovation.

HCBN: You mentioned exhibitors - so you do have a typical trade show exhibit area for vendors?

JF: Yes, we have an exhibit area for the different manufacturers where they can showcase their newest products and present clinical data. One thing people should know is that the manufacturers of each FUS machine -- and the design, functionality, and clinical purpose for each system –- can be very different from each other. The manufacturers also provide the training for the health care provider on how to use the machine, so it is valuable for clinicians and researchers to meet with these companies.
