A peak flow meter is a medical device used to measure the peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) of a person's breath. It is most commonly used to monitor asthma, but can also be used to measure other respiratory conditions. The peak flow meter measures the speed of air as it is exhaled from the lungs and is expressed in liters per minute (LPM). The peak flow meter is used to assess a person's lung function and to help determine the severity of an asthma attack.
Peak flow meters are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to accommodate different age groups and lung capacities. The most common type of peak flow meter is the handheld, plastic device. These devices are typically inexpensive, ranging from $10 to $50. Peak flow meters are manufactured by a variety of companies, such as Omron, Respironics, and Welch Allyn. Higher-end models may include additional features, such as a built-in memory to store readings, or an alarm that sounds when the peak flow rate drops below a certain level.
