DM: But isn't health IT adoption too big to be a quality improvement project? I thought they were supposed to start small.
JR: It is bigger than the normal quality project. Our emphasis is to start small and build a platform for transferring the skills to others in the organization. We find that works best.

We have come to accept that the challenges of health care are often too big. [Health IT adoption] is a near organizational crisis than can't be avoided. The stakes are high but one nice thing is the stakes are so high it becomes an easier way to engage leadership. People are open to trying something new now.
DM: Do you recommend health IT vendors?
JR: No, we are agnostic. One may not be better than another. People misunderstand the frustration. In general the functionality of the system is not the problem.
