The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved internship program is an intensive, broad-based first postgraduate year that offers in-depth exposure and progressive responsibility in the major medical disciplines of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and emergency medicine. The program can be tailored within AOA guidelines to fulfill the requirements of the PGY-1 year in many accredited residencies. Of course, the classic rotating internship, with emphasis on primary care, remains as a standard.
