The Emergency Residency Program at South Pointe Hospital is a 3-year comprehensive, structured curriculum based on the standards for Emergency Medicine as outlined in the Basic Documents for Postdoctoral Training as established by the ACOEP and approved by the COPT of the AOA. While the structured curriculum forms the framework for the didactic portion of the program, the clinical exposure is carefully selected to provide a broad based exposure of residents to medical and surgical emergencies of all ages to round out the residency training.
As the base hospital of the Northeast Ohio Osteopathic Emergency Medicine Residency, South Pointe Hospital has partnered with the following institutions to form a consortium:
* Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (Cuyahoga Falls)
* Doctors Hospital of Stark County (Massillon)
* St. Joe's Hospital/Humility of Mary (Warren)
Clinical rotations are arranged to expose residents to critical care, surgical subspecialties, i.e. (orthopedics, ophthalmology, ENT), pediatrics, trauma, EMS, research, and administration. A minimum of 18 months of emergency medicine rotations are arranged to provide a progressive level of responsibility for the patient care. The seven core competencies are an integral part of both the didactic and clinical services. Residents are monitored daily, evaluated monthly by their preceptors and quarterly by the Program Director and the Director of Medical Education.
Residents participate in all clinical decision making and patient care activities.
Our program utilizes direct observation, monthly and annual in-service testing, simulation labs, procedural labs, OSCE's and mock oral board reviews to ensure mastering the seven core competencies.
Research is encouraged and nurtured throughout the 3 year residency.
