The Cancer Education Program (CEP)
was established in 1995 to address the education needs of cancer patients and caregivers. It links the research and patient care endeavors of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center to provide the best possible experience for each individual who comes through its doors.
Cancer Education Center
The Cancer Education Center is free to patients, their families, and the public. They can find reliable, relevant, and current information about all aspects of cancer care. The Cancer Education Center is located in the lobby of the Gonda Building on the street level and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Public Inquiries
The Cancer Education Program (CEP) serves as a triage point for more than 1,500 cancer-related phone calls and e-mails a year from the public. The questions received range from general cancer inquiries to requests for specific information about the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Some inquiries are answered by CEP nurse educators, while others are directed to specific departments within Mayo Clinic.
Lectures, Conferences and Special Events
The Cancer Education Program staff provides cancer education for patients, the public, and professionals locally, nationally, and internationally. The CEP staff educate groups and coordinate events on topics such as cancer prevention and detection, specific cancers, nutrition, clinical trials and research, finding reliable resources and various other cancer-related topics.
American Cancer Society Navigator Program
Beginning in August 2001, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society (ACS), Midwest Division, entered into a unique partnership. In addition to Mayo Clinic Cancer Center employees, ACS Navigators also work in the Cancer Education Center. The Navigators assist cancer patients and families with their educational resource and referral needs, regardless of where they are getting treatment. ACS Navigators help cancer patients find their way through the system and provide general assistance with Internet resources, books and periodicals, services, support groups, supplies, materials and medical equipment.
