Q&A with Tom O’Brien

by Lauren Dubinsky, Senior Reporter | March 23, 2015

DOTmed News: Can you discuss the issue of lung cancer in the U.S. and what Ethicon is doing to try to curb it?

TO: Lung cancer is a devastating disease because it typically presents no symptoms, so patients don’t realize they have it until it’s too late to really treat. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women.

And according to the World Health Organization, lung cancer is the most frequently diagnosed serious malignancy and the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Because the incidence of death is excessively high for lung cancer (versus other cancers), this is a key focus area for our company.

We’re working to transform lung cancer by delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions to improve access and satisfy unmet patient needs. To help reduce the incidence of lung cancer worldwide, Johnson & Johnson strongly advocates smoking cessation through our programs tailored for our employees, including smoke-free campus environments, and through our NICORETTE products we offer to consumers.

We also support screening for lung cancer which leads to earlier detection, and potentially more effective surgical outcomes. In addition to the products and programs we provide, which I’ve outlined above, Johnson & Johnson recently announced the establishment of a new lung cancer research center in China, where the incidence of lung cancer is disproportionately high.

DOTmed News: Are there any other exciting innovations for thoracic surgery that Ethicon has in the works?

TO: In addition to our new ECHELON FLEX Powered Vascular Stapler, Ethicon offers the ECHELON FLEX GST SYSTEM, a powered stapler and reload system uniquely designed to provide a better grip on tissue for the least tissue slippage during firing and the HARMONIC ACE®+7 Shears with Advanced Hemostasis, the first purely ultrasonic device with a 7 mm sealing indication.

These devices are part of Ethicon’s procedural solution for thoracic surgery and we’ll continue to evolve our thoracic solutions to meet the needs of surgeons and hospital customers, to ultimately improve patient outcomes.
