Q&A with Dr. Nick van Terheyden

by Lauren Dubinsky, Senior Reporter | April 01, 2015

NVT: Yes, we want to fix this problem. Nuance health care solutions help physicians to stay connected to patients during care while technology works in the background to capture and share the patient story to the people who need it.

Using medical speech recognition and language understanding and mobility tools, Nuance helps physicians make eye contact and support a better clinical workflow while capturing and sharing patient information as part of a digital health record. We do this without forcing physicians to make hard choices and sacrifices that often come at the expense of the patient experience.

DOTmed News: What can physicians do to improve the physician/patient relationship despite the burden EHRs put on their shoulders?

NVT: As physicians, it is our responsibility to listen to our patients, and practice not just the science, but also the art of medicine. Given current health care pressures, physicians should use tools that improve productivity and save time on clinical documentation to shave minutes off the administrative burden of EHRs.

Physicians can integrate the patients, who in our survey have clearly articulated their desire to be included, in the care process and use technology to facilitate their inclusion and the sharing of knowledge. Simple steps such as reorienting the office or consultation room to share the view of EHR can help include the patient in the experience and help educate them.

Offering options for patients to contribute and share information ahead of a consultation, and integrating patient-generated data that can be automatically summarized and presented concisely can save time and allow doctors to focus on the interpretation of the data rather than the capturing of information. And finally, using suitable tools including speech recognition to capture and generate clinical notes in front of the patient is more efficient and helps patient understanding.
