FM: If I have to pick one, I’d say the fact that we’re committed to be a patient-centric hospital. That’s very difficult. It requires dealing with complex government requirements, and complex insurance and Medicare requirements, and a slew of other things. One of the things we do is to start every day with a safety huddle. We bring our leaders in, remind everyone about who our customers are and how important it is to make sure we’re putting them first.
HCB News: What sets you apart?
FM: I would say the recent addition of Arizona Heart Hospital to our license — they became a satellite system to Abrazo. When it opened in 1998, it was the first hospital dedicated to heart disease and quickly became a top facility. We’ve got a lot of talented physicians, including Dr. Timothy Byrne, a highly regarded cardiologist.

HCB News: Did staffing shift with the addition of Arizona Heart?
FM: There have been moves from physicians. Some have moved or expanded practices at one or another of the hospitals. We’ve also been able to add some new physicians to the system that weren’t practicing there previously.
HCB News: How much competition is in the area?
FM: It’s highly competitive. There are three major systems, academic facilities, in the area. We have to be on top of our game to remain competitive in the market.
