App: MerckManuals

MerckManuals is full of clinical information — and it needs to be. According to the company, that type of information doubles every 18 months. The Merck Manual Professional app steps in to help keep medical professionals current with their knowledge. It provides background for thousands of conditions, covering etiology, pathophysiology and options for evaluations and treatment. It delivers the entire contents of the website (almost 3,000 pages, nearly 1,300 photos, 169 videos and more), says Dr. Robert Porter, editor-in-chief for The Merck Manuals and executive director of scientific affairs. It provides users with access to thousands of topics written and updated regularly by more than 350 academic physicians. In addition, it provides information on outpatient procedures, drug reference information, interactive case simulations, quizzes to check user knowledge of medical disorders and a large list of other benefits.

Sometimes the best way to get the results you’re looking for is to explore what you’re looking for with others. Collaboration is often the key to providing the best patient care, and having access to professionals with similar backgrounds delivers a powerful way to collaborate. QuantiaMD is a free online community where physicians learn from medical experts and collaborate with peers to deliver better care for the people they serve. By using QuantiaMD, you can ask experts questions, share your knowledge and improve your ability to serve your patients. Use of the app also allows you to obtain AMA PRA Category 1 credits, and contributions to this fountain of knowledge are acknowledged with Amazon.com rewards.

App: Human DX
Produced by: Human Dx. Ltd.
Price: Free
Current Version: 1.17.7
Last Update: April 3, 2017
Works on: Android and iOS

Big data has entered the mainstream lexicon, but while the understanding of its potential to be a powerful tool is there, the ability to use that tool has been limited. Human Dx is seeking to change that. The app allows physicians and medical students to collaborate on clinical cases. Users can store, modify and share anonymized cases seen in the field and meet education and ongoing medical licensing requirements. Each case entered into the system also contributes to the “big data” puzzle as they build knowledge on a worldwide scale, helping to better inform the health care community.

Education and translation
With the push to reduce costs and improve service to patients, health care professionals are being asked to do more with less. That means there’s less time to obtain continuing education units to maintain certification. It also means there’s often less resources for physicians to count on, so things like translation services, for instance, can be a luxury in some locales. Fortunately, for those struggling to keep certification requirements current, or struggling to break through the language barrier with patients, there are apps for that.
