Dual-chamber cardiac pacemakers

The dual-chamber technology in pacemakers maintains the usual synchrony of atrial and ventricular contraction of the sinus node. It has one lead placed in the atrium and another in the ventricle of the heart, which reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation, stroke, and death due to heart diseases.

“The dual-chamber pacemakers are considered in individuals with sinus node dysfunction or atrioventricular block after joint consensus statement issued by the Heart Rhythm Society and American College of Cardiology Foundation. Several manufacturers develop dual-chamber pacemakers. For instance, Abbott's subsidiary St. Jude Medical develops dual-chamber pacemaker ASSURITY to manage cardiac rhythm. The introduction of dual-chamber pacemakers by various manufacturers with advanced technological features will boost the global cardiac pacemakers market in the coming years,” adds Neha.

Bi-ventricular cardiac pacemakers

A bi-ventricular cardiac pacemaker is commonly known as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). It is used to treat delay in heart ventricle contractions in individuals with advanced heart failure. It is an electronic battery-powered device, which is surgically implanted under the skin. Such device has 2-3 leads or wires attached to the heart to balance the heartbeat. The leads are placed through a vein in the right atrium, right ventricle, and coronary sinus vein to pace left ventricle.

The bi-ventricular technology is relatively a new approach to treat arrhythmia, and it significantly improves the survival rate among individuals with heart failure symptoms. The device is recommended to be safe to use with minimal risk, proved to improve ejection fraction (percentage of blood that leaves heart at the time of contraction), and showed to improve the quality of life.
