The neurological disorders that occur in infancy can have enormous implications for the long-term and short-term survival of the infant. The more complete the information we receive from a scan, the more we have the ability, medical staff and family together, to develop treatment plans, both during the stay in the NICU and regarding long-term programs of treatment following discharge. In my opinion, comprehensive brain imaging is the basis for the most accurate diagnosis possible of a baby's condition.
In some circumstances, ongoing processes in the brain need to be carefully observed, and in such situations repeated scans within a short period of time are necessary, for example, in the case of hydrocephalus where a decision has to be made regarding inserting a shunt to drain excess fluid from the brain.

Bringing imaging to the neonatal unit means
faster and safer care for newborns.
The fact that we no longer have to make the critical decision of whether or not to take a neonate to the external MRI unit is one of the prime benefits of the system. Often, those neonates who most need an MRI scan are those for whom the preparation and transportation to the external MR unit holds the most danger. The noise, vibration, temperature fluctuations and other hazards encountered when transporting vulnerable babies outside the NICU have now been eliminated. The benefit to both neonates and doctors is substantial, and in my opinion, will help with the treatment and significantly improve the future quality of life for those babies who are scanned inside the NICU.
Another outstanding feature we have discovered at Shaare Zedek is the system’s convenience and accessibility. Aside from the ease and comfort in which the baby can be placed in the patient bed, which is fully transparent, in the event of an emergency we are able to access and remove the baby in less than 30 seconds. The fact that we can monitor the baby’s vital signs, preserve an ideal temperature and can observe the baby on the video monitor throughout the scan also adds to the safety, usability and effectiveness of the system.
Having the system in our NICU will enable us to perform high-quality imaging in real time for immediate diagnosis and treatment, as well as routine tests that allow us to fully consult with the parents regarding the immediate and long-term treatment of their baby.
