Mount Sinai appoints world-renowned urologic reconstructive surgeon to join Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery

The CTMS is the first comprehensive center of its kind in New York—and one of a few pioneers nationwide—to provide transgender patients with a multidisciplinary, integrated system of care. According to Dr. Safer, CTMS serves a growing need to support patients in New York City through each stage of their journey, from initial assessment and screening to hormonal therapy, surgery, and post-transition care, providing seamless access to affordable care. Patients can see specialists in areas of care such as pediatrics, endocrinology, mental health, gynecology, primary care, urology, plastic surgery, ear, nose, and throat, and infectious disease, all at one location.

Approximately 1,200 surgeries have been performed, including gender reassignment, hysterectomy, and orchiectomy.
Approximately 2,000 trans patients have been treated and cared for.
Most insurance plans are accepted including Medicaid.
Ten full-time surgeons are on staff with expertise in plastic surgery, genitourinary surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology.

There are no wait lists for genital surgeries.
In 2017, CTMS became the first center in New York to offer a transgender surgery fellowship to fill a void in training programs for physicians looking to provide gender-affirming care.
