NYC Health + Hospitals has pledged $224 million over the next decade in upgrades for medical imaging technology throughout its entire enterprise.
GE Healthcare will supply it with replacement scanners that generate higher quality images at faster rates for quick diagnoses and treatment of patients. It is part of the public health system’s aim to standardize care and provide patients with modernized, up-to-date technology.
“Providing premium care to a growing patient population continues to be challenging in today’s healthcare environment,” said Everett Cunningham, president and CEO of GE Healthcare, U.S. and Canada, in a statement. “This relationship will provide both clinicians and patients access to the latest imaging technology while helping NYC Health + Hospitals meet its goals of reducing costs, increasing hospital efficiency, enhancing clinical quality, and improving patient experience.”

NYC Health + Hospitals relies on 470 imaging systems to perform 1.5 million imaging procedures annually. The investment made by it will commence with the replacement of 230 scanners over the first four years, including MR, CT, nuclear cameras, X-ray machines, catheterization labs, PET and PET/CT machines, and fluoroscopy units.
Out of the total amount, $20 million will be used for upgrades at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island, which is still experiencing renovations for damages it sustained in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. GE will install 47 new imaging systems there, including ultrasounds, MR machines, and a range of X-ray scanners.
“At NYC Health + Hospitals, we are making investments that will improve patient experience and provide the highest quality of care, diagnosis and treatment for all New Yorkers,” said Mitchell Katz, president and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, in a statement. “We’re standardizing our technology to offer patients the same quality of care regardless of what facility they visit.”
