An A-eye on diabetes: What COVID-19 taught us about the importance of telemedicine and artificial intelligence

June 08, 2020

With the time saved, endocrinologists can see pressure alleviated, especially considering the overwhelming ratio of diabetes patients to endocrinologists in the country. Practically-speaking, AI reduces the amount of time an endocrinologist has to spend on sifting through data, and therefore affords him or her more time to address other patient concerns and a larger volume of patients altogether.

Hospitals and clinics have already begun using AI in a multitude of forms to combat the coronavirus, ranging from assessing ventilator capacity and needs to diagnosing medical images of patients. The incorporation of AI software into hospital and clinic systems could enable doctors to seamlessly review patient glucose level data and accurately manage insulin therapy. Combined with telemedicine technology, AI could provide wider care to a broader number of people who need it, improving the lives of people with diabetes around the U.S. and beyond.

Although the coronavirus pandemic is affecting everyone, it's important to ensure that patients who are more susceptible to complications and require frequent physician assessment receive the care they need. The combination of telemedicine and AI can play a pivotal role in making the difference for those who have less access to the care they require and for the endocrinology community facing an uphill battle to keep up with patient volume.
