Lack of cybersecurity becomes a dealbreaker for device purchasers – As hospitals become more cyber aware, security teams will start to review the security level of new medical devices and it will become a major consideration before purchase and integration. In response, medical device manufacturers will begin highlighting the security level built into their devices, as well as touting their ongoing service during the lifetime of devices.
Increased compliance and cyber insurance premiums – Rather than having separate initiatives for security or compliance, governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) requires a top-down approach led by executive leadership to empower functional teams to take responsibility for identified risks. With clinical networks becoming more complex, and the increase in cyber risk, executive leadership will need greater assurances, and executing a thorough GRC strategy will be crucial. As chief information security officers (CISOs) typically serve as the central connection between other departments such as IT, compliance, and biomedical engineering, their security staff will need end-to-end visibility by implementing technologies that automate security governance and compliance based on common security frameworks. Those tools will be necessary to both access cyber insurance and, to whatever extent possible, keep the premiums down. Insurer premiums are up and policy caps are down, so healthcare providers need to take proactive steps to secure their organizations, simply because the alternative means more cost and more risk — and neither of those will play well to the board.

Regardless of what happens in 2022, recent security trends provide a wakeup call for healthcare organizations to begin implementing improvements now, because the intensity and frequency of cyberattacks against hospitals will likely continue unabated.
