Atrium Health just completed building a new hospital, which opened to the public on February 23. It is called Atrium Health West Union and is the first hospital to open in Charlotte in the last 30 years. It serves the western part of Union County, including the towns of Matthews, Mint Hill, Stallings, Indian Trail, Weddington and surrounding communities in the eastern part of Mecklenburg County.

The healthcare system saw the need for a new hospital due to the growing population in the area and to spare patients in these locations long drives to seek care. “It’s incredible to think that over a century ago, in 1921, the first hospital opened in Union County to provide the best care possible to everyone, no matter their background, demographic or even residential location. Now, 100 years later, Atrium Health Union West is opening its doors to build on that same, strong foundation of compassion and care, which still exists in Union County today," said Eugene A. Woods, president and CEO of Atrium Health, at the time of the opening.

Back in 2020, the healthcare system merged with Wake Forest Baptist Health, to create a system, also named Atrium Health, that offers better medical education and better care to more than 7 million people across the region.
