Post warranty service: According to industry experts, on average, ultrasound machines should be replaced every 5-7 years. However, the life of a machine may be extended with planned preventive maintenance and updates to software and hardware. With that said, purchasing additional service agreements outside of the OEM coverage is highly recommended. This would include the machine as well as the transducers and any additional components.

One significant cost associated with ultrasound and service contracts is directly tied to the transducers, which are integral to ultrasound systems. These devices generate sound waves that bounce off body tissue to create the images necessary for the exam. As a result, most vendors provide varying levels of replacement coverage for transducers due to wear and tear, accidental damage, or malfunction. It is highly recommended to obtain transducer coverage beyond the warranty period at the time of purchasing the equipment.

Ultrasound usage is projected to continue to grow as it is less costly, and a more accessible diagnostic tool compared to other expensive options such as CT and MR scanning technologies.
