HCB News: As a leader of the society, what have been some of your top initiatives or priorities?
MM: The post-pandemic health care landscape continues to evolve. In addition to technical and scientific advances, we have seen transformation of our health care delivery systems, labor management and even patient expectations. It is critical that radiology and RSNA stay ahead of these changes. One of my priorities as RSNA President has been to embrace emerging innovations and advocate for their early adoption.
RSNA has been a leader in championing the practical and ethical application of AI in medical imaging: publishing important peer-reviewed research, showcasing the latest technologies at our annual meeting, providing timely, quality education to our members, and launching the very first radiology-specific AI Certificate program. For years now, RSNA has organized AI challenges to spur the creation of AI tools for radiology. The data gathered from these challenges will provide valuable information, enabling us to improve patient care on a grand scale.

A growing concern in radiology is that we’re seeing more instances of other disciplines practicing image interpretation and image-guided interventions. This is why it is imperative that radiologists continue to strive for excellence in patient care, stay current in clinical knowledge, and serve as primary drivers of innovation in medicine. RSNA provides the guidance, the education, the tools, and the networking and career opportunities radiologists need to remain successful in these changing times.
HCB News: AI had a big year with the general public. Has radiology's relationship with AI changed since the last RSNA meeting?
MM: Radiology’s relationship with AI is changing all the time. In the early days, radiologists viewed AI with trepidation, but now AI is opening new doors for us. AI is able to assist with a host of tasks from scheduling to reporting to triaging imaging studies, freeing the radiologist to devote more time to the more enriching aspects of the job. As large language models (LLMs) grow more sophisticated, they will likely play an integral role in radiology reporting and patient communication. AI is here to stay, so radiologists should learn to embrace AI; and I think many already have.
HCB News: Are there events or presentations you are most looking forward to at this year's meeting?
MM: The RSNA 2023 theme is Leading Through Change, which is a topic of great importance to me. The plenary session programming reflects that theme and focuses on how radiology professionals can be more intentional while leading teams and organizations through transformative change in health care, so I’m excited for those sessions. I am also, of course, looking forward to delivering the President’s Address at the Opening Session.
