Five Minutes in Healthcare - Dr. Alan Cheng

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | October 21, 2025
Dr. Alan Cheng
Five Minutes in Healthcare is where I discuss current events with some of the industry's most influential leaders.

Today I am joined by Dr. Alan Cheng, chief medical officer of the Cardiac Rhythm Management business at Medtronic and practicing electrophysiologist, for a conversation about the evolution of patient monitoring devices and the rise of consumer wearables.

Specifically, we discuss the difference between wearables and medical-grade monitors, such as the Medtronic LINQ ICM, a small implantable device that monitors and records heart rhythms to flag irregularities or arrhythmias. While Dr. Cheng thinks the rise of consumer wearables is a positive thing, he notes that there are differences in their performance when compared to medical-grade devices.
