The "21st Century Global Health Technology Act" has recently been introduced into the Senate. The Act would authorize the coordinated, long-term research and development of global health technologies to meet goals to reduce child mortality, improve maternal health and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. The bill supports the U.S. sharing existing knowledge to help address prevalent health problems in low and middle-income countries.

The Act would establish the Health Technology Program, which would coordinate and lead research and development efforts to be funded by USAID on a competitive basis. The Program would also serve as a national laboratory and technology development program for global health. The Program would have the imperative to develop, advance, and introduce affordable and appropriate technologies designed to improve the health and nutrition of developing country populations.

The Health Technology Program would be located at an institution with a successful record of advancing health technologies and integrating practical field experience into the research and development process to introduce the most appropriate technologies. The Administrator of USAID, in collaboration with the Health Technology Program, would have the obligation to submit an annual report to Congress describing activities and progress of the program.

State: Class Action Suit Challenges CA's Reduction in Adult Day Health Care

A class of elderly and disabled adult plaintiffs has brought a lawsuit against the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and its Director to stop cuts in Adult Day Health Care services which the plaintiffs say would be devastating and place the plaintiffs and class members in "imminent risk of institutionalization, hospitalization, injury or death." The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
