Keith LaPlain, marketing director for Varian Medical Systems, discusses state-of-the-art radiation therapy using Varian's RapidArc radiation therapy system and what it means for radiation oncology.

The RapidArc is designed for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), which entails a 3-D distribution of radiation via a single, 360-degree sweep around the patient. This system treats the entire volume of the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. LaPlain explains how the system employs image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) with improved image acquisition times, user interface and messaging system, and other tools that improve efficiency and reduce treatment times for the benefit of not only the radiation oncologist's schedule, but for patients who want to spend as little time on the treatment couch as possible.
