C-Rad Sentinel system
enhances patient safety
San Diego, CA - With the recent focus on the importance of patient safety during radiation therapy treatments, Radiology Oncology Systems, Inc. (ROS) announces that the C-Rad Sentinel system enhances patient safety. The system uses laser beam technology with a high resolution CCD camera that maps the surface of the patient during radiation therapy treatment delivery. It allows for sub-millimeter accuracy in detecting patient motion during the delivery of high energy x-rays used during radiation therapy treatments.
A high level of accuracy is critically important during radiation therapy treatments that deliver a focused beam of x-rays directly to the tumor. In an IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) treatment, for example, there is a small margin for error. Often the difference between hitting the tumor target and hitting healthy tissue is less than one cm. The C-Rad Sentinel system helps to ensure proper patient position through the entire treatment process.
Currently during most IMRT deliveries, patients are imaged prior to treatment delivery, but there is no information as to the position of the patient when the x-ray beam is being delivered. Sentinel allows clinicians to track the patient position in real-time, during x-ray beam delivery, down to the millimeter.

This process, known as intra-fractional motion detection, provides clinicians insights into patient position during this critical phase of treatment and gives them decision making tools to either stop treatment or continue treatment based on real-time patient positioning data.
The C-Rad Sentinel system was developed by C-Rad, AB (www.c-rad.se) of Uppsala, Sweden. It is distributed in the United States by Radiology Oncology Systems, Inc. (ROS) (oncologysystems.com/c-radMotionDetection.aspx ) of San Diego, CA.
