"During the day of training, they go through the complete operation of the injector," Maull says. "Once they have completed that, they perform a complete PM procedure on the injector while filling-out the PM check sheet that coincides with the unit. Finally, they perform a complete calibration and calibration verification procedure while filling out that corresponding check sheet."

Strong global market
OEMs and third party providers are finding a strong injector market overseas.

"Our European business has been doing extremely well as are some of our emerging market efforts and that's where the excitement has been in the past 18 months," Williams says. "There has been a lot of government tenders put out for capital equipment and injectors follow."

Scofield observes that Vivid Imaging's international business units drove growth in 2009 and they expect that to continue well into 2011.

"Our VIBS and MRI Coil Lab have experienced the largest growth internationally," Scofield says. "Vivid Imaging will continue to target emerging markets in South America and Asia to fuel growth."

Looking ahead
While no major advancements in the industry are on the immediate horizon, Scofield believes most injector advancements in the near future will be in the area of patient recordkeeping and PACS integration.

"The syringe and contrast media have been largely commoditized in recent years," Williams says. "Value for the contrast delivery business will come from workflow improvements and imaging suite integration, amounting to what will ultimately be a state of near-complete automation for contrast delivery."

Experts predict workflow and integration for diagnostic imaging injection will improve for CT and MR, though the protocols will change as scanner technology and features change.

"On the cardiovascular side, you will see a lot more novelty in regards to methods and protocol," Williams says. "Contrast and the way you deliver will be key in how you find the things you will repair and how you go through with the therapy."
