Noras, which has 7,000 scanners in the U.S. market, has made a strong effort to grow its MRI business in the States by creating a unique platform and plans to be a major player in the years ahead.
“We are trying to develop devices that are particular in niche markets like breast coils. Neurosurgery is another niche and we see that growing,” Miller says. “The demand may not be as high, but you have to look to stabilize because of the competition and adapt the product to that need.”

Noras sees a big opportunity in the baby boomer generation for these coils and is concentrating its efforts on a prostate biopsy coil it believes will rise in demand in the future.
Toshiba, meanwhile, acknowledges that although technology continues to advance, not all hospitals and health facilities can keep up with the cost of those advancements and are working toward creating products that are effective and affordable.
“We think coils are a very important part of an MR scanner’s performance and without the coils focused on areas to give the best possible image quality in the shortest scan time, the industry would not be taking care of the patients,” Clarkson says. “We already have technology in place that allows whole-body imaging and we will be focusing more on that to [increase] efficiency and comfort and taking that to 3T pretty shortly.”
