RESTON, Va. -- SNM, an international scientific and professional organization of more than 16,000 molecular and nuclear imaging physician, scientist and technologist members, announced the appointments of Michael S. Nelson, CAE, to the position of chief operating officer, and Deborah A. Barnes, CPA, to the position of chief financial officer.
"SNM is extremely pleased to have such experienced and capable executives assisting with the management of the society," said Virginia M. Pappas, CAE, chief executive officer. "Both bring a wealth of experience that will be integral to enhancing our position as the leader in molecular and nuclear imaging," she added. "The appointment of these two individuals strengthens the society's position with regard to future challenges, improves our efficiency and responsiveness and provides the necessary leadership that is fundamental to achieving our strategic and operational goals," explained Pappas.
Nelson is an accomplished executive with more than 20 years of experience in operations, finance, human resources, facilities management, marketing, strategic planning, strategic relationships and technology. In his newly created position, he will oversee the marketing, information systems and leadership staffs. Nelson, who resides in Olney, Md., most recently served as the COO of HomeSource Real Estate Asset Services, a property management and marketing company in Silver Spring, Md., that manages all Department of Housing and Urban Development foreclosures in Maryland and the District of Columbia. He has also served as senior vice president for finance and administration and CFO for the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and as executive director and chief executive officer of the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, Chevy Chase, Md. He holds bachelor's degrees in management and marketing from the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

A seasoned executive with more than 20 years of finance and accounting experience, Barnes had been serving as SNM's director of finance since July. In her new capacity, she will supervise the membership, finance and administration and facilities staffs. Prior to coming to SNM, Barnes served as the director of finance and administration at the American Industrial Hygiene Association in Fairfax, Va., and as controller for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, both in Washington, D.C. Besides being a certified public accountant, Barnes holds a master's degree in accountancy with an emphasis in information systems from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va., and a bachelor's degree in accountancy and personnel management from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She resides in Springfield, Va.
