Siemens said Monday it tapped Dr. J Marc Overhage to be chief medical informatics officer of its health services business unit. He's set to start work March 28, the Malvern, Penn.-based device giant said.
Overhage has more than 25 years experience in the field, and was one of the architects of the Indiana Health Information Exchange, the nation's largest health information exchange, according to the group's website.
Overhage served as president and CEO of the exchange, while also acting as director of medical informatics with the Regenstrief Institute Inc., a think tank based out of the University of Indiana's School of Medicine campus and one of the backers of the Indiana HIE. Overhage is also a professor of medicine and medical informatics at the school.
"The Indiana Health Information Exchange is one of many well-established implementations across the country that are proving, on a daily basis, the value of health IT in providing patient-centered care," John Glaser, CEO of the health services business unit, said in a statement. "These solutions are enabling clinicians to use health IT to make more timely, effective and efficient treatment decisions."
Overhage has received acclaim for his research on clinical support, and earned the Davies Award of Excellence in 1997 for his work on clinical decision support software.
He is also a member of the HIT Standards Committee at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Quality Forum, Siemens said.
