Insurance provider Cigna has picked MedSolutions to be its exclusive radiology benefits management company in the United States.
Last month, the Philadelphia-based health insurance company said it would start unrolling the programs in various U.S. regions midyear in an effort to cut back on imaging expenses.
"As more and more Americans use MRI, CT and PET scans, we can help our customers receive higher quality care and make informed choices about the care they receive, potentially saving them hundreds of dollars for each scan," Dr. Alan Muney, senior vice president, total health and network, with Cigna, said in prepared remarks. "MedSolutions' requirements for using evidence-based, best practice measures and for credentialing facilities will help CIGNA customers receive high quality, clinically appropriate and safe radiology services."

MedSolutions' package includes Informed Choice, a patient outreach program designed to help patients undergoing advanced imaging scans "learn about all of their options as they and their doctor choose where to have tests done," according to a statement from Cigna.
Franklin, Tenn.-based MedSolutions has worked with Cigna for the past 13 years, the group's CEO Curt Thorne said in a statement.
