“On the outpatient side, the RIS is going to take on additional requirements that pertain specifically to the meaningful use programs,” says Merge’s Pekarek. “That’s going to be the technology with which radiologists can comply with meaningful use. It will take on additional compliance via other government programs, and so the RIS will gain in importance from a compliance standpoint and from a data collections and data transfer standpoint. I think that the integration of the different workflow tools in outpatient radiology will become more instrumental to the success of outpatient imaging.”

Tara Vail, Agfa HealthCare’s head of the RIS/PACS business unit and GPO IT executive, predicts that the health care IT sector will become more of a virtual environment.
