Dunlee Glassware Tip of the Month: Troubleshooting Cupping Artifacts

Sponsored Content | April 12, 2012

The primary cause for cupping artifacts is beam hardening. These artifacts are commonly seen at the outer edge of images. This is because attenuation values are higher near the edge of the body. Cupping artifacts can also manifest when imaging large uniform organs, such as the liver.

Although CT reconstruction algorithms incorporate a beam hardening correction to reduce these effects, if tissue density deviates greatly from parameters established for normal soft tissue composition, the X-ray beam will attenuate quite differently than expected and shading artifacts may occur.
