“I wouldn’t say we’re by any means done,” says Burbank of NxStage. “We haven’t come up with the perfect machine yet, which will make it smaller, lighter, simpler and safer. The technology will continue to improve over the next two years.”
Providers, patients and manufacturers also hope that word will continue to spread about the option of home dialysis to those for whom it can be a better option.

NxStage, for one, has worked to promote its product and the home dialysis option through various social media channels. Support groups and websites like Berkowitz’s Home Dialyzors United have also helped show dialysis patients that they have the option to enjoy a more flexible lifestyle.
“At-home dialysis gives you so much more freedom to be able to do things when you want to do them,” says Berkowitz. “There is so much to be said about regaining control over your life and becoming that much more self-confident.”
