Diagnostic Radiology Residency
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences offers a four-year diagnostic radiology residency that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Resident performing an interventional procedure Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). One post-graduate preliminary clinical year, required as a prerequisite for entry into the diagnostic radiology residency, is automatically included with this program.
Internship
The clinical year includes rotations in Radiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Orthopedics, as well as the Emergency Room and Ambulatory Care Clinic. In addition to general medicine, residents rotate through Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Urology, Gastroenterology, and Pulmonary services. Several rotations are at large private hospitals in Little Rock, affording the intern an opportunity to function in a private practice environment.

Residency
The diagnostic radiology program is designed to provide a sound basis in all aspects of diagnostic imaging. Residents interpret films and perform procedures under faculty supervision, but gradually assume more and more responsibility as they progress through the training program. During the 4-year training period, residents rotate through the following subspecialty areas:
Body computed tomography (CT)
Breast imaging
Gastrointestinal radiology
Genitourinary radiology
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Musculoskeletal radiology \t\t
Neuroradiology
Pediatric radiology
Radionuclide imaging
Thoracic radiology
Ultrasound
Vascular/interventional radiology
The resident's time is shared among three hospitals with a total of 1,200 beds. All medical, surgical, and psychiatric sub-specialties are represented. In addition to busy emergency departments with a large Ultrasound with Dr. Terry volume of trauma, there are also extensive out-patient services.
Approximately 210,000 diagnostic exams are performed in the three hospitals annually, including approximately 6,000 nuclear medicine procedures, 33,000 CT examinations, at least 16,000 ultrasound examinations, and approximately 29,000 MRs. UAMS does more PET scans than any other facility in the state of Arkansas, between 2,000 and 3,000 annually. Our residents are directly involved with most of these procedures.
