For almost 70 years, the Clinical Laboratory Science Program has educated individuals to be leaders in this field. Students develop a professional attitude, a solid foundation in related scientific principles, proficiency in the performance of laboratory procedures, and the skills necessary to take on the professional role of healthcare practitioner.

The Department of Laboratory Services
The Department of Laboratory Services, one of the largest clinical laboratories in the state, is an integral part of The Reading Hospital. The staff of clinical laboratory scientists and technologists performs nearly 3 million tests annually to provide physicians with information helpful in diagnosing and treating patients.

The expertise of eight pathologists, three pathologist assistants, specially trained department supervisors, a Medical Director, and an Administrative Director provide professional support and perspective.

The Laboratory includes the following sections: Urinalysis, Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology/Serology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Surgical Pathology, Cytology, Phlebotomy, Central Receiving, and Point of Care Testing.

The Surgical Technology Program

For more than 30 years, the Surgical Technology Program at The Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences has prepared qualified professionals for a technical role on the surgical team. Combining instructional lectures and clinical experience, the 10-month program prepares students for the national certification examination and to assume entry-level positions as surgical technologists.

The Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Department of Surgery
With 120 surgeons in 11 specialty fields and 150 nurses and surgical technologists, The Reading Hospital's Department of Surgery performs over 34,800 operations each year. Procedures include open-heart surgery, hip replacements, cataract removals, and cerebral artery bypass procedures.
